How it began
From an idea into a platform for meaningful restoration.
Mangrovate began with the recognition that Indonesia carries both an enormous responsibility and an extraordinary opportunity. The country is home to some of the world’s most important mangrove ecosystems, yet many coastal landscapes continue to face degradation, erosion, tidal flooding, pollution, and pressure from competing land uses.
Too often, restoration is judged by the number of seedlings planted rather than whether the ecosystem survives, functions, and continues to support coastal communities in the long term. Mangrovate seeks to help shift that focus.
The initiative brings together ecological knowledge, community participation, research, implementation experience, and institutional collaboration. Its purpose is not to impose one universal restoration model, but to help develop approaches that fit each landscape and its people.
